Beware of Job Scams

At KSB Career Services, your safety and security are our top priorities. As you explore job opportunities, it’s important to be aware of potential scams that could put your personal information and finances at risk. Here are some tips to help you identify and avoid job scams:

  • Unrealistic Promises

Be cautious of job offers that seem too good to be true, such as extremely high salaries for minimal work or jobs that guarantee instant success. Scammers often lure victims with promises that are unrealistic.

  • Upfront Payments

Legitimate employers will never ask you to pay for training, application processing, or other job-related expenses. If you’re asked to provide payment or sensitive personal information upfront, it’s likely a scam.

  • Unprofessional Communication

Pay attention to the quality of communication. Scammers often use poorly written emails, generic greetings, or unofficial email addresses. Authentic companies will use professional language and official contact information.

  • Request for Personal Information

Be wary of employers who ask for personal information such as your Social Security number, bank account details, or passwords early in the application process. Reputable employers only request such details after a formal job offer has been made.

  • Lack of Company Information

Research the company thoroughly before engaging with them. Scammers often create fake companies or misrepresent real ones. Verify the company’s website, check reviews, and contact them directly to confirm the job offer.

  • Pressure Tactics

Legitimate employers will never ask you to pay for training, application processing, or other job-related expenses. If you’re asked to provide payment or sensitive personal information upfront, it’s likely a scam.

  • Work-From-Home Offers

While many legitimate jobs offer remote work, be extra cautious with work-from-home opportunities that require you to pay for equipment, supplies, or software upfront.

If you suspect a job scam, please report it immediately to our Career Services team at careerservices@carisca.knust.edu.gh. We are here to assist you and ensure that your job search is safe and successful. Stay vigilant, and protect yourself from fraud.

Steps to Protect Yourself

  • Research the Employer

Investigate the company thoroughly. Look for a professional website, read reviews, and check job review sites like Glassdoor [https://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm]. Perform a Google search using the company name along with terms like “scam,” “review,” or “complaint” to uncover any red flags.

  • Verify Contact Information

Cross-check the contact details provided in the job offer with the official information listed on the company’s website. Discrepancies can be a sign of a scam.

  • Be Sceptical of Instant Offers

Legitimate employers typically have a structured hiring process that includes interviews and a review of your qualifications. Be cautious of job offers that come too quickly without proper vetting.

  • Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t hesitate to consult with someone you trust before proceeding.
